History
Emerald North State School was opened in 1980 as a result of the expansion in the coal mining industry in Emerald. The school experienced massive enrolment growth in its early years. In the late 1990's the enrolment stabilised.
Enrolment is still significantly affected by issues in the coal mining industry, but the school population now reflects a cross section of the community. The move to twelve-hour shifts for many workers has impinged greatly on parents' ability to assist in school activities.
Shift work also has a major impact on the social and family lives of many students. With the industry facing a future largely determined by international pricing trends, the uncertainty of employment longevity is also a major factor.
School strategies
Our strategies to achieve this vision are to:
develop curriculum in both the early and middle years of schooling that is tailored to meet the diverse needs of our students.
maintain a safe and tolerant learning environment.
develop self esteem and interpersonal skills to enable students to become productive Australian citizens.
support all staff to develop a deeper understanding of the varied cultures of our students.
involve the parent and wider community in the school.
Code of behaviour
At Emerald North State School we believe that all of the school community should adhere to the following behaviour principles or codes in promoting a positive teaching, learning or working environment:
Safety
The physical and emotional safety of self and others is a prime consideration in all practices undertaken in the school and its programs.
Effort
The primary aim of schooling is student learning. All members of the school community will apply themselves to the best of their ability in the promotion of this goal.
Respect
Recognition and tolerance of the different roles and responsibilities of school community members will be demonstrated through appropriate communications and actions.
Self-responsibility
All members of the school community are responsible and accountable for their actions and will demonstrate socially appropriate behaviour choices and acceptance of consequences.
