Special Education Unit

The mission at the Special Education Unit (SEU) at Emerald North State School is:

To enhance opportunities for students with special needs to fulfil their potential.

Emerald North State School has adopted the practice of inclusion as part of everyday school life with positive partnerships between SEU, classroom and specialist teachers, teacher Aides and Administration.

The goals of the students Individual Education Programs (IEP’s) are implemented and there is a sense of commitment and ownership of all stakeholders to provide the optimal education program for the students.

Our Special Education Unit caters for all students with a diagnosed disability, from Prep through to and including Year 6.

The disabilities include:

  • Speech Language Impairment
  • Intellectual Impairment
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Physical Impairment
  • Visual Impairment
  • Hearing Impairment

Emerald North State School is committed to supporting the inclusion of students with disabilities. Emerald North Special Education Unit implements a variety of complementary and alternative programs to meet individual student needs. We believe that one of out most gratifying outcomes is the acceptance and caring of our students by their peers. This is reflected in the social interaction occurring within and outside formal classroom environments.

Personnel from the Emerald Student Support Services provide necessary expertise in their roles as Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Advisory Visiting Teachers. Staff also main contact with such agencies as Autism Queensland, Royal Queensland Bush Children’s Health Scheme, Cerebral Palsy League and Child and Mental Health.

We believe that the Emerald North State School SEU is a wonderful example of best practise in the inclusion of special needs students in all aspects of school life.
